The center of the region is the city of Aosta – one of the main tourist centers of northern Italy. The city is rich in history and attractions, it is located in the widest place of the valley, at the point where the Butier River flows into the Douro Balatea, at the intersection of the tunnels of Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo. The city was named after the Roman emperor Augustus, who in 25 BC. e. He defeated the Celtic tribes that lived here and established his outpost.

In ancient times, the city lay at the crossroads of trade routes linking Italy with France. This city has preserved the aroma of centuries: the classical harmony of the buildings of ancient Rome is emphasized by the captivating architecture of the Baroque era and the stern power of the Cathedral of the XI-XVI centuries. In the vicinity of Aosta, on steep mountain hills, gloomy castles of local feudal lords rise for centuries guarding the peace of their vassals.

Fans of vivid spectacles are invited to the carnival, which takes place in February in the cities of Aosta, Verres, Gressoney. Knightly fights, processions in luxurious costumes of the Middle Ages, tastings of local wines and cheeses, performances by folklore groups. The central part of the city is surrounded by the Roman fortress wall. The main gates of the city are called Porta Pretoria. They are considered the largest of those that have survived from ancient times. In Aosta you can see several medieval towers and churches, including the early Christian ones. One of the saints, Anselm, who in 1093 became Archbishop of Canterbury, was from Aosta. Ancient Roman art objects, as well as objects representing other early cultures, make up the collection of the regional archaeological museum. Nearby is the 12th-century city cathedral. Inside you can see beautifully executed tombstones, a choir, a mosaic floor. There is also a small treasury at the Museum of Tesoro.

The sights of these places are medieval castles built along the road leading from Aosta to Turin. There are more than a hundred of them, but only some of them are well preserved. For example, the castle of Saint-Pierre, with a magnificent night illumination turning it into a fairy-tale palace, the castle of Fenil, which today houses the furniture museum, the elegant castle of Isson, built in 1480, Verreux with a wonderful collection of drawings, watercolors and prints of the 19th century, and also a royal hunting house, whose rooms are decorated with royal trophies.

Valle d’Aosta is famous for its cheeses, the most famous of which is fontina. It has been produced according to the original recipe from 1270 on small cheese dairies in the Alps, using milk from a special breed of cows – spotted red. The typical dishes of the local cuisine are the Valdostan fonduta – a kind of cheese fondue, Valpellinentes – a traditional thick soup based on vegetable broth, stale bread, fontina and alpine herbs. Dreams or dried meat: this dish was once made from the pulp of a thigh of a mountain goat. But since the local goats moved to the rank of “sacred animals”, they began to use chamois meat or venison.

The highest altitude vineyards in Europe, which are located at the foot of the great alpine peaks, can be considered a peculiar record of this land. Here, grapes grow contrary to all laws, clinging tightly to the fertile soil layer and climbing stairs up the rocky slopes. The pride of winemakers in Valle d’Aosta is the local grape varieties that produce such fine wines as dry white Petite Arvine and Muscat blanc di Chambave, dry red Fumin, vintage white dry Blanc de Morgex et de la Salle and others. All wines produced in the valley are assigned the DOC Valle d’Aosta category. Due to their fine delicate taste and rich aroma, they occupy a worthy place in the European market.
